Hi Jura Books friends,
The political poster exhibition last month went brilliantly! Thanks to
everyone who came along and especially to those who helped out with
staffing and publicity. Around 300 people visited the exhibition over
its two weeks. Plus there were hundreds of Sydney Uni students who saw
the exhibition by accident - they came to eat their lunch in the hall
where the posters were displayed (which is one of the uni's common
rooms). Many of the students would stick around to take in the
radical art and politics. For a lot of us younger people it was an
eye opening experience - we would never have thought political
posters could be so powerful and beautiful. Jura sold a good number
of pamphlets and books, and we raised over $300 towards preserving
the poster collection.
Our other fundraising efforts have also been going well. Thank you to
everyone who has donated, together you've raised almost $6,000 to
keep Jura alive. Some of this has been spent on urgent bills, and the
remainder will go to much needed building repairs - such as the front
awning above the footpath. If you haven't donated yet, please do so -
we still don't have enough to do all the repairs we would like to, or
to make a repayment on our mortgage. Just send an email to
jura at jura.org.au and we'll get in touch.
Our main focus at the moment is a MEGA WORKING BEE this weekend.
Tragically, the Jura library has been out of action for over six
months. Our recent working bees have been poorly attended, and so the
plastering and painting is still not complete. We really want to
finish the renovations and re-open the library before the end of the
year. Please come along and help for just an hour or two. There'll be
snacks and good company...
Working bee times:
12-5pm Saturday 13th October
12-5pm Sunday 14th October
There are also a number of other groups using the Jura space at the
moment, including the eco-workers collective, who are having an open
organising meeting this Thursday 11th October at 6pm.
See you there!
